We traveled back home this weekend to good ole Ta Town. It was a short trip, but time well spent with the fam. AND, we got to experience the un-heard of 70 degree weather in January.
Did I really just write January!? Yes I did. Well, too bad Kansans, better get ready for the storm of the century. So, they're saying. If you know me well, you know how I feel about all this snow.
Ok, time for a short recap. Five feelings (with stories) I took away from the weekend:
Appreciation
The primary reason we went to Ta Town was to get Brian's car fixed. After dealing with an annoying loud whistle for three months and a $900+ quote from a Kansas City car shop, we decided to call my daddy-o to the rescue. He's a genius when it comes to cars, so the option was a no-brainer. I guess my brother thought so too, since he made the trip home to also get some work done. The boys spent all morning and afternoon in the shop, so MUCH appreciation to my daddy for helping us out!
Embarassment
While the boys turned wrenches, Amy (bro's gf) and I decided to go shopping. Well, all the cars were being occupied at the shop and my mom was at work, so we only had one option of getting there: My very first car, the '92 maroon Honda Accord with 200,000+ miles, that my dad still chooses to rock out from time to time.
Don't get me wrong, she was a good car for my first 7 years of driving, I really loved her. But, she has taken a turn for the worst. Chipped paint, rust spots, sun damage, visible dents and mishaps that are still there from running into things in college...she's in bad shape. Her new name is The Beater.
Beater or not, she was our only option to get to the mall. I bit the bullet. However, it was quite detrimental to my life. I kept thinking as I clunked down the street slightly covering my face, someone from high school is going to see me and think, "wow, Krista has done really well for herself, she's still driving the same POS from high school."
We survived.
Delight
More like obsessed! I tried Orange Leaf for the first time. We stopped at one in Olathe on our way back into town, but Wichita has them too. OMG, amazingness! It's like Pinkberry on crack. There were about 15 different kinds of frozen yogurt to choose from and way too many topping choices. I had Passion Fruit, Strawberry and Cake Batter each loaded with different toppings (strawberries, kiwi, sprinkles, cookie dough). If you have one near you, go now!
Disappointment
The Cats were slaughtered by the chicken hawks. KSU is such a disappointing team this year. Luckily, we just went up to On the Border to watch the game and get some grub, so we weren't completely surrounded by the annoying chant. How do we go from a #3 ranked team to where we are now? Our hopes have been shattered. But, I'm still proud to be a wildcat.
WTF?
Is that even a feeling? Probably not, but once you hear the story, you'll understand. So, after OTB, we headed to a bar. This bar happens to be where you are guaranteed to run into people from high school. And just to be honest, there are people from HS that I would love to run into, and others that, well, I would just prefer not to. So I see this guy from HS that I would have loved to dodge, but when he comes up to me (and Brian and my parents), it was unavoidable. And keep in mind, he was little intoxicated.
So the fake convo begins...where are you at now? What do you do? Then, he asks me to put out my hands, palm side down (so he could check to see if I was married).
Me: Yeah, I've been married for two years now. That's my husband, Brian.
HS guy: Where did you pick him up at?
Me: [I didn't pick him up you d-bag] We met at K-State and then moved to KC after graduation
HS guy: Damn girl, you look really good.
Me: Well thanks. So, what have you been up to?
HS guy: [Interrupting me mid sentence] Man, you just look so sexy. Are your boobs fake or are those real?
First of all, my boobs are not some guy I went to HS with's business to be talking about. Especially in front of my husband. Sheesh. And second, I am less than endowed up top, so I highly doubt they looked fake.
And, for the record, I wasn't wearing a revealing shirt at all. They were very put away. Who seriously says that!?

Friday Randomness
It's Friday and I'm happy! Here's a few random things about this week:
A Little Behind
I worked out yesterday for the first time in two weeks. And I hated every minute of it. But, this mention isn't about my lack of motivation to get ready for summer. It's about my lack of keeping up with technology.
As I'm running on the treadmill, I can't help but notice a co-worker of mine (I have a gym at work), a college grad who recently started, staring at my iPod. Oh yeah, he couldn't keep his eyes off of my ancient iPod mini. You know, the first smaller iPod model apple ever invented? The one that just so happens to be bigger than most of the models out today. Yep, that's what I still work out with. He was probably wondering what it was and why he has never seen one before.
Well, my trusty old iPod mini is still alive and kicking. Works great actually. It just looks like I have a boom box strapped to my arm.
So, my question for you is...should I embrace my ancient iPod mini and use it until it breaks...or opt to buy one that is more up to speed with the rest of the world?

I saw this movie this week with my girls. It was quite funny and one I would recommend seeing. It was nice to see Natalie Portman in a different, more normal role. And Ashton, well Ashton is just a cutie patootie. My favorite quote from the movie: "You look like a pumpkin bitch!"
Why are you still here?

I'm on a restaurant kick...or...I wanna be.
In my opinion, Kansas City has a lot to offer when it comes to restaurants.
With multiple areas around the city that offer innovative, unique, delicious and affordable dining options, the list is endless.
This city is obviously no NYC aka the most glorious destination in the USA for dining, but we have lots of areas to choose from: Plaza, Downtown, The Northland, Midtown, Brookside/Waldo, West Bottoms, Legends and the ginormous ever-growing Johnson County.
We're doing pretty good if you ask me.
I've lived here nearly four years and my taste buds don't have much to show for it.
We go out to eat every once in awhile, but we rarely try new places. We always tend to flock to our favorite spots, where we order the same things we always order and know we will leave pleased.
There's nothing wrong with that, but I have this unbearable desire to venture out and experience all the dining Kansas City, the city we live in, has to offer.
It does help that I work downtown. My co-workers and I have discovered some pretty amazing eats.

We crossed off Blanc Burgers + Bottles. I had heard great things about it and have been carrying around the Groupon since September. I even blogged about it here.
See...major suckage on trying new places...even with a Groupon.
This place was super tasty! A little pricey if you are looking to kick back a few beers, but the overall experience was totally worth it.
I ordered the turkey burger. Oh man. To. Die. For. And don't even get me started on the truffle fries displayed in the cute little shopping carts. Delish!

Wee Wee Weeeeeeee!

That's what I was shouting this weekend as I went sliding down a huge hill on a snow sled. Well, let's be honest, the wees only came out after the screams of complete fear had vanished.
When we first arrived at the Shawnee Slopes, we hesitated our pre-determined "great idea" the night before over dinner and drinks of going sledding, with second thoughts almost taking over.
We all stood at the top of the hill, sleds in hand, and watched as tiny little youngsters would get a running start, and send themselves barrelling down thehill mountain head first, with not a fear in the world. Fearless.
I like to think of myself as an adventurous person. But this time was a bit different. I think our whole group (with the exception of Matt) were contemplating our great idea. The hill was a bit steep, and showed some flaws.
Visible patches of grass and mud showing it's obvious excessive use over the past few days and bumps you couldn't avoid hitting. Not to mention the swarms of little tikes all over the place.
The thought process of me sledding at 10 years-old was quite different than the thoughts coming from this almost 27-year old.
The many what ifs about crashing into a child, aches and pains the next day, possible broken bones, injuring a child, not being able to get out of bed the next morning, getting yelled at by a parent after almost hitting their child...you get the drift.
But, we all got over our fears and spent the afternoon drowning our sorrows of the KSU game by sledding. It was so much fun! Even Jake got to partake in the activity. What a great way to wear out the pup!

Big Screen Deprived
Me and the hubs have always been REALLY terrible about going to movies. Like, I can count on one hand how many movies we have seen in theaters in the past year...and my hand is only flashing you a peace sign.
Yes, I'm completely serious and not just being facetious.
Sad, I know. Two movies in the theater in the past year. And one was Eclipse. How did this happen!?
It's not because we don't do date nights or push our quality time to the back burner. We just don't go to the theater.
It's quite easy to believe when you consider the following:
But really, we need to change this strange rut we have gotten ourselves into. According to some, motion picture theaters are gradually being taken over by The Digital Revolution and will soon be no more.
I'm not sure that's what will happen, but I don't want to miss out on really great flicks in the theater anymore.
Like Inception. The movie we watched last night from our new couch.
Wow, what a brilliant, compelling, well-written, make you think movie. It was hard to follow at times, spoken from the annoying movie watcher who asks way too many questions (Brian hates it), but completely held my attention.
Now, I know I am utterly behind on seeing this movie. Tell me something I don't already know. Like your take on the ending. If you haven't seen the movie yet, you may want to stop reading now.
I hear there is quite the debate going on about it, so I want to hear your thoughts on the matter.
At the end, when Leo was reunited with his children, was he in real life or in a dream? Did the totem keep spinning or did it topple over?

Introducing: Basement Facelift
You might remember when I blogged about our basement project here, here and here. A formerly unused space, small, drab and screaming for help. Not to mention the tan 80's-looking couches that just sat there collecting dust.
They might have been really comfortable couches, but I just couldn't see the room coming together if they were included in my Young House Love inspired mood board (sorry hubs).
Well, I have finally caught up with my crazy life this week and have photos and details to share with you all!
For starters, when I began this random blog almost a year ago, I never thought Keeping Up with the Kutters would be a space I would share home improvement projects. Not because I don't have anything to share with people, simply because we haven't achieved any home improvement-worthy projects.
We haven't conquered a kitchen remodel or knocked out a wall. Heck, we haven't even completed a tile job. YHL would most definitely laugh at our amateur upgrades.
But, I realized after reading many of the blogs I follow, a project doesn't have to be significant in order to share it. It surprised me how the smallest of projects would keep me engaged, give me inspiration. Seeing the way others displayed decor, the arrangement of pieces, combinations of colors.
So peeps, I might be sharing some of our past (and future) home improvement projects with you. Don't expect originality or anything close to greatness, but someone might enjoy it.
In all honesty, isn't that what us bloggers hope for anyways? We plan, think, compile and write, and then we hope that someone out there gets something out of it. It's sort of like taking a shot in the dark and hoping you hit something. Right? Why else would we take the time out of our busy lives to do this?
Wow, my mind is totally wandering now. I'll save this thought for later and get back on track. :)

With the awkward size of the room coupled with our desire of getting a sectional couch, we were really worried about finding something that would work. Plus, it comes with custom pillows of your choice.

I love this mirror. And it was only $25. It goes great with the vase and stems, adding a metallic element to the room.

Plus, these have a nifty tray on the backside of the lid, making the piece multi-functional: coffee table, foot rest and storage. Cabin Fever
For the past few days, I've been sniffling, sneezing and trying to breathe. Taking shots of cold medicine every four hours, and reaching for the Afrin like a crack fiend.
Fighting a cold isn't fun, but it typically causes one to be glued to the couch for several days.
And that's just what I did pretty much the entire weekend.
Except for when I forced myself out of the house to get some fresh air. In the freezing cold. All for the sake of my depressed dog who was suffering from cabin fever.
The three of us bundled up and made our way to the park near our house, with an inkling of hope that some of the sidewalks would be clear.
We were too optimistic. Everything was still covered. So, we walked, dragging our feet, as they were swallowed up by the wet snow, while Jake enjoyed every last minute.

He may be a City dog these days, but he is a hunting farm dog at heart. One of the great things Shawnee has to offer are open fields and fewer busy streets:)

An open field just beyond a fence (technically someone's back yard) without a single snow track. Ahhhhh, I love that. Until, Jake ruined it.
But, he had fun, which brings a smile to my face.
As my limbs gradually changed to an icy chill, I questioned our decision to venture out in the snow. The tips of my fingers turning numb as I was snapping pics.

But these babies make it a little more enjoyable. Dually purposed for shooting and warmth, with an added removable mitten to cover my cold fingers when needed.

Uggs. Because every girl deserves to have toasty warm toes and a fur hood.
I may have been cold, and a little wet, but I enjoyed our little walk through the snow. I know Jake did too.
And a memory of snow from childhood. Whether it be sledding, making snow angels, building snow forts or having a snow ball fight. Snow tends to bring out the child in all of us.
These boys were having so much fun. I had fun watching them. Up the hill, down the hill, repeat, repeat, repeat.
