Checks and Balances

Does anyone out there still balance their checkbook? And I mean the old fashioned way, not checking and balancing online. You know, when you write down every purchase and transaction you make, then calculate consistently to know what you have in your account? Then, you utilize your monthly statement to ensure everything is accurate?

I'd be willing to bet there aren't too many people who do this.

Well, guess what? I do!

Are you shocked? Probably not. But maybe.

I question myself too, but it's just the uber organized, must-know-it-all nature in me. You can poke fun all you want, call me ancient, but I do it out of pure habit. And because of the way my mother raised me. I owe her for making me the frugal, money conscious woman that I am today.

Anyways, I have greatly contemplated throwing in the towel. I'm not sure it is necessary anymore with everything being online.

It's quite possible, that by next month, I will have graduated and joined the 21st century as it relates to balancing your checkbook.

So enlighten me, anybody else out there still as crazy as I am and balance your checkbook by hand?

Hmmm, I bet you are a check writer too, aren't ya?!?!?! You get to the cashier and whip out the old trusty checkbook, joining ever dwindling yet exclusive clan of thousands of other old ladys (not that you are old) and say, "Who do I make this out to?" The line of impatient and angry customers continues to grow behind you as you seem to be completely aloof to your surroundings. "Why is she doing this? Doesn't she know that a debit card IS THE SAME THING?!?!?!?!?!" You then proceed to painstakingly record the purchase in your log, ensuring that the date and amount are correct. You, my friend, are the epitome or yesteryear! Please stop wasting my time, drop your archaic habits and join the 21st century!

HAHAHAHAHA - I cant believe you do this, Happy Thursday!

I'm with Ted. You are old school! I do keep a monthly excel spreadsheet though to let me know when bills are going to hit us (autopay is pretty great) so we don't have overdraft into our savings. So maybe I'm doing the same thing, just electronically?

Ditch the checkbook ledger!

Guys, I know it's old school! I said I was crazy for doing this:) But no Ted, I don't write checks for daily purchases or bills. I do all our bills online and use credit/debit for everything:). I assure you, I am not the annoying old lady holding people up in the checkout line.

Megan, I think I will start the Excel spreadsheet thing. Great idea. That's similar to what I was doing using the ledger so I knew exactly when our bills would be withdrawn. Thanks!
